Changing Seasons
Changing Seasons is worked from side to side in two colors, and the color changes happen mid-row, every row. That sounds fussy until you do it. The pattern walks you through carrying both colors the whole way, so you never cut the yarn and never sit down at the end to a pile of ends.
The shawl is built from two parts that grow together. A plain double crochet field makes up the body, and a filet style edging runs alongside it the entire length. The plain field gives a speckled yarn room to show what it does, and the open edging keeps the bottom of the shawl from looking heavy.
The sample pairs a speckled cream with a deep plum, and the contrast is what makes it work. Blocked, the shawl measures 58 inches wide and 18 inches deep at the longest point. That is enough to wrap once and have it stay where you put it.
Yarn:
675 yards / 617m of fingering weight yarn.
The sample uses BigFoot Yarn Company Wendigo (75% superwash merino and 25% nylon, 3.5 oz / 100g = 463 yards / 423m) in (A) Cottesloe Beach and (B) Motown.
Hook:
US size E/4 (3.5 mm), or the size you need to reach gauge.
Notions:
Tapestry needle
Gauge:
24 dc = 4¼ inches / 11 cm, and 10 dc rows = 4 inches / 10 cm.
Check your gauge before you begin. This shawl is worked side to side, so your row gauge sets the width of the shawl and your stitch gauge sets the depth.
Finished Size:
Blocked, the shawl measures 58 inches / 147 cm wide and 18 inches / 46 cm deep at the longest point. Blocking opens the filet edging and squares up the fabric, so do not skip it.
