Sunset is worked from side-to-side, which is what gives it its long, low triangle shape. The whole shawl grows out of one repeat that you will have memorized within a few rows, so once you are settled in, the work carries itself. Because it is built side-to-side, you set the length and the depth yourself by working more or fewer repeats.

The edge is the part that earns the name. Along one long side, the shells open into a run of fans, each one a small spray of stitches that fans out low the way light does at the end of the day. That scalloped edge is worked right into the shawl as you go, so there is no separate border to add when you are done.

The body is a calm field of shells and double crochet, steady enough to work while watching TV or listening to an audiobook, with the fan edge giving it somewhere to build to. Blocked, it spans 62 inches wide and 23 inches deep at the deepest point, big enough to wrap and long enough to drape down the front. It reads as more involved than it is to make.

YARN:

924 yards / 845m of fingering weight yarn.

The sample uses Sock Obsession Yarns Resilient Smooth Sock (75% superwash merino, 25% nylon, 3.5 oz / 100g = 462 yards / 423m) in the colorway Rush Hour.

HOOK:

US size E/4 (3.5 mm), or the size you need foe gauge. Make sure you take the time to verify it before you start.

NOTIONS:

Tapestry needle.

GAUGE:

16 dc and 9.5 dc rows = 4 inches / 10 cm. Check your gauge before you begin. Because you work side to side, your gauge sets the depth of the shawl and how far your 924 yards will take you.

FINISHED SIZE:

Blocked, the shawl is 62 inches / 157.5 cm wide and 23 inches / 58.5 cm long at the deepest point. Blocking opens the shell fans along the edge and sets the shape, so plan for it.
