Cobblestone Cowl gets its name from its surface. A dropped stitch reaches down three rows and pulls up a raised bump, and worked all around the cowl those bumps sit like stones set into a path. The texture is the whole point, and it is the kind you keep running your thumb over as it grows.

You work with two colors, two rounds at a time, switching back and forth as you go. That rhythm is what makes this one hard to set down. You finish two rounds in the main color and want to see the next two in the contrast, and then you are three repeats past where you meant to stop. It works up fast for a cowl with this much texture.

The two colors do more than stripe. Use a tonal as your main color and the cowl reads classic and calm. Flip it, put the variegated in front, and the same pattern turns brighter and more playful. Blocked, the cowl sits 26 inches around and 10 inches deep, close enough to stay put and deep enough to keep the chill off your neck.

Yarn:

Fingering weight yarn in two colors. Main color takes 193 yards / 176m and the contrasting color takes 128 yards / 117m.

The sample uses Montana Crochet Sock (100% superwash merino, 3.5 oz / 100g = 438 yards / 400m) in Boulder for the main color, and Inner Yarn Zen Superwash Fingering (100% superwash merino, 3.5 oz / 100g = 400 yards / 366m) in Lupine for the contrast.

Hook:

US size E/4 (3.5 mm), or the size you need for gauge.

Notions:

Tapestry Needle

Gauge:

In single crochet, 18 stitches = 4 inches / 10 cm. In the stitch pattern, starting with a double crochet round, 17 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm. Check your gauge before you begin. It sets the circumference and the depth, and it tells you whether your two colors will go the distance.

Finished Size:

Blocked, the cowl is 26 inches / 66 cm around and 10 inches / 25.5 cm deep. Block it to the schematic so the texture sits even and the shape holds.
